A day after Joe Philbin named Ryan Tannehill the starting quarterback, the Dolphins returned to the practice field to continue to implement their game plan for Atlanta.

Because the third preseason game is a dry run for the regular season, the team is spending plenty of  time trying to simulate what the Falcons could run on Friday night.

Many fantasy football drafts are right around the corner, so it’s time for our fantasy guru, James Morris, to continue his 2012 Fantasy Football preview. After breaking down the quarterbacks and running backs in recent weeks, James turns his attention to the wide receiver position. Here are his wide receiver rankings based on standard (non-PPR) scoring formats::

As you would expect, tonight’s episode of “Hard Knocks” focused a good amount on former Dolphins WR Chad Johnson.

After a Friday night dropped pass and a Saturday night arrest, Johnson’s contract was terminated by the team on Sunday and the show was there to capture much of what was a very intense weekend in South Florida.

Things, began, though, on an even more serious note, as the show opened with the death of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid’s son.

The Miami Dolphins released a short statement on Sunday night announcing the termination of Chad Johnson’s contract, officially ending his homecoming in Miami after 61 days.

Here’s some of the Dolphins’ reaction to Johnson’s release:

Joe Philbin:

“Again, it was more a body of evidence from June 11th forward. When he came in on June 11th, we sat down and we talked and I was very clear as to the expectations of the program.

After Friday night’s preseason-opening 20-7 loss to Tampa Bay, the Dolphins returned to the practice field to kick off another week of training camp.

Because of David Garrard’s knee injury, when they broke into their two-pronged version of team drills, each of the three remaining quarterbacks–Matt Moore, Ryan Tannehill and Pat Devlin–received additional reps.

In Joe Philbin’s first-ever preseason game as an NFL head coach, the Dolphins suffered a 20-7 loss to Tampa Bay.

Typical of any team’s first preseason game, there was some inconsistency but a few bright spots, too.

Here are my five key takeaways from tonight’s preseason opener:

  • Ryan Tannehill Didn’t Look Like a Rookie: It may have been Tannehill’s first NFL game action, but he looked like a seasoned veteran.

Two days after the team’s first scrimmage of training camp 2012, coach Joe Philbin released his first depth chart of the season.

While there are obviously many things that will change between now and Week 1 at Houston, this piece of paper certainly gives us a decent idea of where the coaching staff’s heads are at.

Starting where most fans are most interested, David Garrard is listed as the starting quarterback.
