Though his signing may have flown under the national radar, Richard Marshall has already made an impact on the Dolphins defense, emerging as one of the unit’s early leaders.
The first-year Dolphins cornerback joined The Finsiders to talk about defensive adjustments and how pace can affect production.
After a lackluster performance in the preseason opener, Marshall said defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle told the first-team defense in meetings that they need to “play with their hair on fire.”
“I don’t know what the problem was and why we weren’t getting to the ball fast, but the second group definitely showed what we want our defense to be,” Marshall said.
On Tuesday, Coach Philbin switched around the practice schedule, taking the team outside before it finished the second half–which comprised mostly of team drills–inside the bubble.

The dog days of training camp have arrived, but the intrigue has yet to subside.
While he was in Davie as part of his NFL training camp tour, CBSSports.com’s Pete Prisco joined Jesse Agler to discuss Chad Johnson’s release and the team’s quarterback competition.
Joe Philbin handled Johnson’s situation decisively, citing a lack of fit between player and organization. Prisco felt that the diminishing return on investment–even if it cost the team next to nothing financially–just wasn’t worth it.
On Monday, the Dolphins returned to the practice field, on the heels of Chad Johnson’s release, to continue preparation for Friday night’s game at Carolina.
After practice, one in which Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill split time working against the first team, Joe Philbin briefly addressed last night’s roster move and the implications heading forward.

The Miami Dolphins released a short statement on Sunday night announcing the termination of Chad Johnson’s contract, officially ending his homecoming in Miami after 61 days.
Here’s some of the Dolphins’ reaction to Johnson’s release:
Joe Philbin:
“Again, it was more a body of evidence from June 11th forward. When he came in on June 11th, we sat down and we talked and I was very clear as to the expectations of the program.
After Friday night’s preseason-opening 20-7 loss to Tampa Bay, the Dolphins returned to the practice field to kick off another week of training camp.
Because of David Garrard’s knee injury, when they broke into their two-pronged version of team drills, each of the three remaining quarterbacks–Matt Moore, Ryan Tannehill and Pat Devlin–received additional reps.

Though it’s certainly too early to tell whether the Dolphins have their long-term answer at quarterback, the team may have, in the process, ended up with its most depth at the position in years.
After he checked out Tuesday’s practice, Bill Polian, the former NFL executive and current ESPN analyst, sat down with Jesse Agler to share his thoughts on what he saw.
This morning, after the previous evening’s Hard Knocks premiere, the Dolphins held a walk-through in the bubble.
The team will return to the practice field later this evening, though, for a 6:25 p.m. practice open to the public–the only open night practice of training camp.
